Borussia Dortmund are one of three teams to have offered Arsenal striker Chuba Akpom a pre-contract deal to move at the end of the season, reports the Daily Telegraph.
The 19 year-old has also received offers from Dutch sides FC Twente and Feyenoord, and with his current contract expiring this summer, he has a serious decision to make on his future.
It is worth noting that we too have suggested renewal terms to Akpom, with Arsene Wenger keen for the youngster to put pen to paper on a three year extension.
Akpom was handed twenty minutes of game time in the 3-2 FA Cup victory over Brighton & Hove Albion, and showed great promise with a couple of marauding runs – and also that he remains incredibly raw.
Twice he went through, and only needed to find a pass to play in a team-mate on goal, but dribbled into a cul-de-sac on both occasions – with Alexis Sanchez left particularly frustrated on one of those.
The potential is there, but at the age of 19 and having not yet scored a senior goal, it’s hard to justify his expectations of first team football – even if he has been incredibly prolific at Under-21 level.
We’ve allowed Lukas Podolski, Joel Campbell and Yaya Sanogo to head out on loan, meaning that Akpom should be granted more opportunities, but Olivier Giroud, Danny Welbeck and Alexis Sanchez are all probably ahead of him in the pecking order at the moment.
Akpom may have a very serious decision to make for the sake of his career – and having developed him to this stage, let’s hope he repays our faith in him.
