Captain Mikel Arteta will spend most of the remaining campaign on the sidelines after undergoing successful surgery on a troublesome ankle.
The Spaniard has endured a torrid time with injuries this season pulling his calf multiple times and his latest set back is an inflamed ankle that has now been properly treated albeit via unavoidable surgery.
Wenger told the clubs official website of the news, confirmed the captain has pulled through fine and now will undergo three months of rehabilitation.
Mikel has had surgery which went well. I have just seen him, he is back with us at the training ground.
He had a limited mobility in his ankle and some persistent inflammation that had an impact on his calf. That meant we had to make the decision to have surgery and it’s a proper solution which gives him the best chance to recover.
Bad news for Arsenal really, no matter your opinion on Arteta it is a big blow to lose a leader and someone who always adds calmness and consistency to our engine room. Hopefully this may force Wenger’s hand in the transfer market and finally buy us a top class defensive midfielder, but I won’t be holding my breath!
