Mesut Özil is yet to really find his feet in the Premier League, and despite his obvious talent has often looked ill suited to the rigours of the English top flight. The German has been piling on the pounds during his spell on the sidelines however, and has hit the gym in an attempt to bulk up, according to the Mirror.
The World Cup winner was rather lightweight when he arrived from La Liga, and often found himself knocked off the ball far too easily. His ability with the ball at his feet makes him a tricky man to dispossess, but as soon as a little physicality is involved he has a tendency to go down appealing for the foul.
He is clearly looking to change that however, and has spent much of the last few months lifting weights in order to toughen up a bit; something Arsene Wenger has taken note of.
“He has worked hard, I think he has taken to the fact that he wants to be stronger,” said the French manager.
“You have more time to focus on it. Every day he is in the gym and he can work on it and you don’t have the fatigue of the games. And it’s better when you look in the mirror!”
Özil is likely to get his first start since returning from injury against Brighton this Sunday, with the manager looking to get our record signing match fit again.
