Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker believes that Arsenal deserved the win over Hull City yesterday. The German scored his first goal of the season from an Alexis Sanchez corner to put us in the lead before Sanchez scored himself to give us a 2-0 victory. The Gunners, who are defending champions in the FA Cup, will now progress to the Fourth Round whose draw will be held this evening.
Speaking to arsenal.com, Mertesacker said:
We have good memories when I think about Wembley and then today. It was a tough fight until the end but we deserved it.
In the first half it could have been three or four-nil. Then Alexis scored and we were relieved.
The second goal was a big relief for the players and he’s a massive threat to any team. We’re delighted with his performances and we need to keep him fit.
We were composed and deserved it. I’m proud of our team because no matter who’s playing we stick together.
Speaking after the match, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger also praised Mertesacker’s performance. He also applauded the effort the German has put in this season. Our defence has been ravaged by injuries but Mertesacker has been a constant throughout and he has featured in most games this season. While he has been accused of not putting in 100%, especially in games like Stoke City and Liverpool where he appeared to move out of the way of a goalbound header, he remains one of the most important players in the side.

This is what the manager had to say:
He has done well. Per’s played many games like Alexis, if you look at the number of games he played. We suffered at Southampton at the back but it was not only Per – as a unit at the back we did not have a good performance. Honestly, I analysed this Christmas period a bit and we played on December 21, 28 and January 1 away from home. I looked at all the teams that played the 28th and the 1st away from home. That means the two consecutive games, none of the teams won. Nobody. We had three away games out of four and I think we took more points than anyone else, even if we were very disappointed at Southampton. In the schedule over Christmas, nobody won on December 28 and January 1.
Fingers crossed for the draw later today. Hope we get someone easy!
