Thierry Henry made his Sky Sports punditry debut on Sunday, and hinted that Arsenal may have had the perfect defensive midfielder in Alex Song, reports the Express.
The King wasn’t exactly suggesting that we re-sign the recently retired Cameroon international, but he did intimate that he was exactly the type of player we need.
“Song would improve Arsenal,” he said.
“That is the type of player you want in front of your back four.
“Song is the captain of the boat. He protects the back four. You need someone to dictate, put players into position, make little fouls by kicking someone – like Claude Makelele used to do.”
That is certainly high praise for the former Arsenal star, and his performances at West Ham this season suggest he deserves such plaudits.
Song is unlikely to ever return to the club however, as his departure was reportedly not on the best of terms.
Although the 27-year-old is capable of being highly disciplined on the field, that is allegedly not the case off the pitch according to the Daily Mail.
Our team spirit and cohesion is superb at the moment, and the last thing we would want is a player who could disrupt that.
We have been lacking a real out and out defensive midfielder ever since Gilberto Silva left the club, but recent performances have suggested Francis Coquelin could be the answer, or at the very least provide a temporary solution.
