I agree with Arsene Wenger in just about anything, and I have always understood the financial constraints that made him miss out on future stars such as Christiano Ronaldo but he has to admit, the constraints have loosened quite a bit now and he can certainly afford almost any player he desires bar Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, which is why I am so disappointed at the moment with this transfer window.
Krystian Bielik has been described as one for the future, though there are quite a number of those currently playing in the youth system. I can understand Wenger not wanting to miss out on a future star as he did with Ronaldo and as we all know, Wenger can spot young talent from 3000 miles away.
My issue with this whole transfer window is the purchase…or soon to be purchase of one Gabriel Paulista. It is not because I do not rate him or think he will not be a valuable addition to our squad but rather the fact that very few people can claim to have actually seen him play. Many people will point to the fact that we had never seen Koscielny in action before he arrived – and now he is an integral part of the team – which is a very valid point indeed.
However, I am referring to the…’shock value’ for lack of a better word. How many teams around us will quake at the thought of seeing Gabriel Paulista on the team sheet? Infact, most strikers will be licking their lips at the prospect of playing him and giving him a baptism of fire to the Premier League. The best example I can think of is Nacho Monreal (Even his name sounds comedic).
Monreal is actually a decent defender, certainly above average, but when he first came to Arsenal, the Champions League draw was unkind to him and we ended up facing Bayern Munich. When Kieran Gibbs was taken off with an injury, all their attacks suddenly seemed to target Monreal and it was no surprise when they scored. It was so bad that suddenly the rest of our players were drawn to that side to lend him support.
Wenger can certainly afford an established name to be cover to the BFG and Koscielny so to go after Paulista shows either a lack of ambition on his side or lack of respect to the other teams currently around Arsenal…it doesn’t help that Wenger still has to deal with work permit issues.
