We have long been linked with a move for Schalke 04 defender Benedikt Howedes, and the German looks closer than ever to a Premier League switch, according to the Express.
The Daily Star credited us with an interest in him this last December, but instead we moved for our new Brazilian centre-back Gabriel Paulista.
An Emirates switch is not out of the question for Howedes however, as he recently revealed that when he leaves Schalke it will most likely be for a Premier League transfer.
“I’m fine here, but in the future I could move on,” he said.
“I believe that if I leave the club it won’t be to remain in this league. I can imagine going abroad to gain a new experience and I think England is possibly my next destination.”
The Express reports that we will move for the 26-year-old again this summer, although that seems hard to believe considering Paulista’s feet have barely touched the ground following his move from Villarreal.
Even if the reports are true, we will still be facing stiff competition from Manchester United for the £14m rated star.
Louis van Gaal is known to be on the lookout for defenders, and it’s difficult to see Arsene Wenger challenging him on this occasion.
