Arsenal v AS Monaco
UEFA Champions League
Kick off: Wednesday February 25th, 2015 – 19:45
A truly embarrassing night for Arsenal and Arsene Wenger again in the Champions League last-16.
Monaco was seen as the perfect opposition for us to finally progress into the quarter-finals for the first time since 2010.
However that wasn’t the case with an inexperienced and depleted Monaco side tactically outclassing us on the day.
Here is how our players rated, and it isn’t pretty.
GK) David Ospina – 6
Despite conceding almost every shot on target on his goal, the Colombia could do little about each goal.
RB) Hector Bellerin – 5
Struggled tactically all night in a game where wasn’t the only inexperienced player on the pitch with teenagers in the opposition side.
CB) Per Mertesacker – 4
As captain on the day, Mertesacker produced one of the worst defensive performances at Arsenal this season.
CB) Laurent Koscielny – 4
Usually the most reliable, Koscielny was too passive for Monaco’s third goal allowing Yannick Ferraira-Carrasco to run clear.
LB) Kieran Gibbs – 5
Didnt have the tactical nous required like most of his defensive partners.
DM) Francis Coquelin – 4
A wild display from the Frenchman which begs the question as to whether his recent form was a false dawn?
CM) Santi Cazorla – 5
Was physically bullied and out-fought by the likes of Joao Moutinho and Geoffrey Kondogbia.
CAM) Mesut Ozil – 3
Completely anonymous performance from the German which made his price-tag laughable.
AML) Alexis Sanchez – 4
Tried to conjure up some magic but his efforts were in vain and too individualistic.
AMR) Danny Welbeck – 4
Missed a couple of guilt edge chance which seem to be proving Louis van Gaal right.
CF) Olivier Giroud – 3
One of his worst displays in week where the Frenchman wanted to become a ‘killer’, he was far from that. Missed chance after chance and seemed like he wanted the ground to swallow him up.
