We have been linked with a host of defensive midfielders recently, with many expecting a signing this past January. One player who we haven’t mentioned for some time however, is Bayern Munich’s Javi Martinez.
The Spaniard epitomises the tough tackling, hard working, and powerful player we need, and has been a target of ours in the past.
He has dropped off the radar recently however, with a season ending injury making him an infeasible option.
The 26-year-old is on the road to recovery though, and could return to action before the end of the current campaign.
He played a pivotal role in the Bundesliga side before damaging his cruciate ligaments, but may find himself pushed aside on his return.
Xabi Alonso was brought in from Real Madrid to fill the gap he left, and the veteran midfielder has been superb since making the switch to Germany.
With a number of other players also capable of performing the holding midfield role admirably, Martinez may initially struggle for first team football. This could benefit us, as we may be able to tempt him into leaving the Allianz Arena and joining us here at the Emirates.
Even if Bayern were willing to let him go this summer, he would not doubt come with a hefty price tag. There would also be an element of risk, as we have no idea if he will be the same player he was prior to his injury.
If we have the funds, it may be a risk worth taking, however. Out of all the players we have been linked with in the past, he is one of the ones that excites me most. Morgan Schneiderlin is arguably one of the few players I would like to see take on the defensive midfield role at Arsenal more than Martinez, and that is purely down to his Premier League experience and the significantly decreased risk his signing would bring along with it.
Francis Coquelin has done a superb job since breaking into the side, but he is yet to totally prove himself as the solution to our midfield woes. We will need reinforcements even if the Frenchman does turn out to be a long term success, and I for one would be thrilled to see those reinforcements come in the shape of Javi Martinez.
