Highly rated midfielder Chris Willock has signed his first professional contract with Arsenal, the club have confirmed.
It is a day which will live long in the memory should the midfielder live up to his potential.
Arsenal were worried that they would lose the play-maker during his scholarship, with his brother in the academy at Manchester United.
Arsene Wenger surprisingly included the midfielder in our early pre-season plans with Willock starting in the game against Boreham Wood, and had some encouraging words to say about the 17-year-old.
“He’s a very young boy and I wanted him to have a run out with the big boys to see how much he has to do,” Wenger told Arsenal Player.
“But technically and tactically he integrated very well. Of course it’s natural that he lacks a bit of power at that age but when he gets that he will be a very interesting player.”
Despite Wenger previously having a massive say on his youngster, change around the club means that Andries Jonker is now in charge of the development squads.
The Dutchman has a massive pedigree in the game and given his nationality, his philosophy fits in well with that of Arsenal’s – he was also Louis Van Gaal’s assistant at Bayern Munich a few years ago.
