Arsene Wenger appears to be putting his faith in young striker Chuba Akpom, and the 19-year-old has reportedly repaid that vote of confidence by signing a new deal at the club, as reported by the BBC.
Our talented English forward seems to have been on the cusp of first team action for a while now, but hasn’t quite been able to break through the barriers. Wenger finally seems to think he is ready however, and has handed the youngster a few shots at first-team football recently.
Akpom’s previous deal was set to expire at the end of the season, but he has now reportedly signed a new four-and-a-half-year contract.
He has been bright when given a chance this season, and looked promising in both the Brighton and Aston Villa games after coming on as a substitute.
We had a plethora of striking options at the start of the season, with the likes of Yaya Sanogo, Joel Campbell, and Lukas Podolski backing up Danny Welbeck and Olivier Giroud. The former trio have all been sent out on loan however, with Akpom shooting up the pecking order as we head into the tail end of the season.
He has been with us since 2002, signing his first professional contract back in 2013. And after spending spells on loan with Brentford and Coventry, he finally looks ready to make the step up to the first team.
