Monaco boss Leonardo Jardim doesn’t seem to have a huge amount of faith that his side can progress in the Champions League, and claims we were lucky to draw them in the last 16, according to the Daily Star.
Out of the teams remaining in the UEFA competition, the Ligue 1 side are definitely considered one of the minnows. It’s not going to be an easy tie, but we were understandably thrilled when the draw was announced.
Jardim is hoping his side can progress, but admits that they are massive underdogs and that we were lucky to draw them.
“Everyone considered us a gift, a lucky draw, so the luck fell to Arsenal,” he said.
“It’s normal that everyone thinks Arsenal will qualify. I too think Arsenal are favourites but in football sometimes money and the favourites don’t win.”
The principality unexpectedly qualified top of their group, with a solid defence the key to their progression. Conceding just one goal in six games, they somehow managed to finish on 11 points despite scoring just four goals.
Having finished second in our group behind Borussia Dortmund, we were fearing once again drawing a team like Bayern Munich or Barcelona. To draw Monaco therefore, was indeed a fantastic piece of luck on our part.
We can’t get ahead of ourselves just yet, but it’s certainly a fantastic chance to progress beyond the last 16.
