Arsene Wenger has this morning confirmed that duo Chuba Akpom and Francis Coquelin have signed contract extensions to keep them at the club for the foreseeable future.
Both Akpom and Coquelin’s deals were due to expire in the summer, but due to their performances in recent months, their contractual situations became a priority for the club.
Akpom’s case was particularly noteworthy. He’s a young starlet who’s been at the club since the age of seven and with his enormous potential, we couldn’t really afford to let him go – especially as he’s so close to the first team.

The fact that the boss has let Yaya Sanogo, Lukas Podolski and Joel Campbell go in January, shows the amount of faith he has in our academy product.
For Coquelin, the case was simple. He is the only natural holding midfielder at the club and his performances have been outstanding. Given that he too is an academy product, to finally see his potential nurtured and for him to then move on would’ve been difficult to take.
It seems as though the club has learnt from past mistakes regarding the likes of Samir Nasri and Robin Van Persie, as we’ve moved swiftly to keep two important talents at out club for the long-term.
