Hector Bellerin put in a brilliant performance against Aston Villa on Sunday, and looks to be growing into an excellent right-back. He clearly has the confidence of the manager too, who heaped praise on the young star following our dominant 5-0 win
The Spaniard put the icing on the cake at the Emirates, knocking our fifth and final goal in against Paul Lambert’s side. He took the goal superbly, displaying composure and experience far beyond his years.
At 19-years-old he is anything but the finished article, and still has to prove himself in Arsenal colours. He has come a long way since his first team debut against Borussia Dortmund earlier in the season however, and could use this time to cement his place in the team while Mathieu Debuchy remains on the sidelines.
Arsene Wenger was delighted with Bellerin’s performance against Villa, and clearly believes he has a bright future at the club. The Frenchman stressed the importance of staying focused however, insisting that the young star needs to make sure his priorities are in order.
“It’s great – I’m pleased for him,” Wenger told Arsenal.com.
“He grows from game to game, he’s more confident and he has that electric pace even in the last minute, to go past people and to get crosses in. Defensively, he has improved a lot.
“Considering his first game, at Dortmund, and what I think of him today, that’s credit to him, because he had a bit of a nightmare away from home in Dortmund.
“When you see what he has produced today, you can only say ‘well done and continue to keep your priorities right – defend well, go forward when you can,’ and he’s doing that well.”
Bellerin has looked excellent recently, and deserves to be our first choice for the moment. Whether he can continue to improve and challenge Debuchy for a starting berth however, is something that remains to be seen.
