There is a story doing the rounds that Santi Cazorla is set to leave the club this summer, with Spanish side Atletico Madrid his reported destination according to Sky Sports.
The champions of the Spanish top flight have allegedly already held talks with members of Cazorla’s entourage, and La Liga expert Guillem Balague claims they are confident that a deal can be done.
“He has 18 months left on his contract at Arsenal, and Atletico have contacted Cazorla’s entourage,” he said.
“Atletico are convinced that they can persuade the player to join them. Then they just have to pay the money.
“There will be one year left on his contract in the summer, and will be available for cheaper.”
With the current form Cazorla has been showing at the Emirates, it’s hard to see Arsene Wenger sanctioning a move. And although he may have struggled slightly at the start of the campaign, he has been arguably our best player so far this season.
At 30-years-old he is obviously no spring chicken anymore, but given he is currently playing some of the best football of his career, it’s difficult to see why we would let him go.
He doesn’t rely overly on his pace, so his decline should be less noticeable with age. And with Wenger recently finding success when pushing the Spaniard deeper into midfield, we may have found a way to extend his career at Arsenal.
Unless the boss can find a truly world class replacement, it’s not a move we are likely to see. We can now afford to hold onto players if we so desire, so unless Cazorla forces the issue then he should still be a Gunner come next season.
