Former Arsenal star Gilberto Silva has issued a challenge to record signing Mesut Özil, and says the German has to improve in order to succeed at Arsenal, as reported by the Mirror.
The Invincible Gunner couldn’t deny the German’s quality, but believes he needs to do more in an Arsenal shirt to convince him.
Silva claims Özil could prove vital to the success of the club, but says he needs to quicken the pace of his game.
“You speak about Arsenal and how they don’t spend big money on a player often but they did with (Mesut) Özil and it is always a bit risky,” he said.
“Coming from Spain it is tough to adapt, it doesn’t always happen straight away.
“I think the most important thing is that the player understands the philosophy of the team, the philosophy of the manager and the expectation from the fans.
“I do really like him as a player but sometimes in the game he does look quite slow, although he has that quality to change the game.
“He can be more decisive for Arsenal for the quality he has, he can be much more decisive for the club.”
Özil comes in for a lot of criticism – both from the media and from the fans. It has, on occasion, been warranted, but his recent form makes it seem a little harsh.
The £42.5m man scored twice and provided three assists in February, with a further two assists against Everton on March 1st.
His form has seen him clinch the Vitality Player of the Month award, and his understated impact on games has proved vitally important to our success.
