Former Arsenal star Paul Merson has bizarrely suggested that Arsene Wenger could be sacked if we fail to beat Manchester United in the FA Cup this Monday, as reported by the Daily Star.
Merson is a popular figure, and we enjoy his punditry largely for it’s comedy value. Sometimes, however, the retired midfielder comes out with some truly ridiculous theories.
We head to Old Trafford for our FA Cup quarter-final clash against Manchester United this Monday, and Merson claims whichever manager comes away empty handed could face the chop come the end of the season.
“[Louis] van Gaal has spent a fortune and has to qualify for the Champions League. Winning the FA Cup might save him. Not doing either? It’s goodbye,” he said.
“But I don’t think winning the FA Cup would be enough to save Wenger if they don’t finish in the top four again”
We are once again competing for a top four spot, and Louis van Gaal’s side are trying desperately to get back into the Champions League. If either side drops out of the top four as well as failing to win the FA Cup, then questions will obviously be asked. An instant sacking seems a bit far fetched though, especially in Wenger’s case.
The board have always shown 100% faith and loyalty in the Frenchman, and clearly believe he is the right man for the job. Missing out on top four would obviously be a a huge blow, but I can’t see Wenger getting the sack.
If he believes he is no longer the right man to lead Arsenal, then I believe Wenger would offer his resignation. I can’t see it coming to that, though, and hopefully we beat United comfortably and finish in the top four to avoid the question even being asked.
Van Gaal’s position is much more uncertain, and after spending so much money this season I think results are required. A top four finish is the minimum Manchester United will be expecting, but an FA Cup win might just buy him another season at Old Trafford.
