New signing Gabriel Paulista is set for a minimum three week absence after sustaining a hamstring injury in the 2-1 win over Queens Park Rangers, Arsene Wenger confirmed.
The central defender started his second match in a row, but this time alongside Per Mertesacker rather than Laurent Koscielny. However, he was only able to last 37 minutes after pulling up with a muscular injury and was consequently replaced by the Frenchman.
Wenger believes it is not a serious hamstring injury but it will certainly keep the Brazilian on the sidelines over the next few weeks.
The manager told the press after last night’s win:
It’s a hamstring. I don’t know, it’s bad enough to come off. It’s usually 21 days, not years!
The last thing we needed was yet another injury with an intense run of fixtures on the horizon. We travel to Old Trafford on Monday for the FA Cup quarter final, then play West Ham United, Monaco and Newcastle United before Easter.
I certainly was hoping Wenger could call on Gabriel for the Monaco tie to help add some necessary pace in the back line so we could be a little more adventurous but still have cover from counter attacks.
Get well soon Gabriel – you really are a Gunner already.
