Arsenal legend Charlie Nicholas has stirred the debate ahead of Sunday’s clash against league leaders Chelsea, with his combined XI for Sky Sports including only four Gunners stars.
There will be a plethora of talent on show at the Emirates Stadium this weekend as the two leading sides in the Premier League go head-to-head.
Arsenal transfer rumours
A combined XI is therefore usually suitable for these types of occasions but there are some positions where Nicholas’ selections are questionable.
Here is the side in full.
GK) Thibaut Courtois
There isn’t really much debating this choice.
RB) Branislav Ivanovic
Despite his consistency, if this team is based on current form then Hector Bellerin deserves a mention.
CB) John Terry
The best centre-back in the country. No argument.
CB) Laurent Koscielny
Our Frenchman should be in any combined XI and is finally getting the recognition he deserves as one of the best defenders in England.
LB Cesar Azpilicueta
This choice seems like a lazy one from Nicholas because, on the evidence over the last four months, there hasn’t been a better left-back than Nacho Monreal in the league.
However, as always with Arsenal, the public perception is that ‘we can’t defend’ which makes it difficult for people to comprehend that we have solid defenders in our squad. It will be a while before many recognise the consistent displays of Monreal.
