It says a lot that no one is talking about Arsenal’s title chances this season even when considering Chelsea’s difficult run in. While Arsenal are admittedly playing like champions, we have been here so many times before that it seems much easier to accept that we should just be looking at next season as a possible time to win our first title since 2004.
Arsenal are known for capitulating under pressure. They might play arguably the best football to watch, but seem to bottle it when the time comes to deliver. How many times have they led the league for an extended period of time only to fall by the wayside, even struggling to finish fourth?
These last two seasons however have been unique in that while we have not always led the league, we have looked like title contenders.
Last season, Arsenal were been touted as a team worthy of winning the Premier league. By the time we met Liverpool, everyone expected us to sweep them aside – despite it the fact it was dubbed a clash of heavyweights… Instead, Arsenal didn’t know what hit them, and went 4-0 down in 20 minutes… In truth, we never recovered, and suffered our traditional February implosion, too.
This season, Arsenal have surprised everyone and won convincingly against the big boys – including Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United in the FA cup. The only blips were against Chelsea and Manchester United in the Premier League despite dominating against them.
If Chelsea were to lose to Manchester United and Arsenal in back to back games, Arsenal would be right back in the title hunt – especially as Chelsea still have to play Liverpool.
It’s unlikely, but a Chelsea defeat at the weekend essentially puts us back in the race. Let’s dream, Gunners!
