Arsenal full-back Hector Bellerin was included in Garth Crooks’s team of the week following his mature display against league leaders Chelsea on Sunday, as per BBC Sport.
Lining up against arguably one of the most devastating wingers in Europe in Eden Hazard, Bellerin stood up to the test and nullified the Belgian’s threat.
In what was a complete performance, Bellerin produced a wonderful goal-line clearance whilst offering himself as an outlet when going forward.
Arsenal transfer rumours
Despite Mathieu Debuchy starting in last week’s FA Cup semi-final against Reading, the Frenchman has a massive fight on his hands if he’s to reclaim the right-back slot.
“Hector Bellerin did as much as anyone to prevent Chelsea tighten their grip even more on the title when he got back to head Oscar’s chip off the line,” Cooks wrote.
“The full-back almost immediately went on an attack that resulted in a penalty appeal when Gary Cahill was alleged to have handled the ball in the box.
“This lad is growing in confidence with every game.”
The maturity in Bellerin’s performances has been admirable given how out of his depth he looked in our defeat at Dortmund in September.
Hopefully this performance has shown Wenger that changing a winning team isn’t needed and come the FA Cup final in May, both Bellerin and Nacho Monreal must keep their place in a back four which now looks very cohesive.
What’s fantastic is that we have outstanding depth at full-back, on both flanks. The competition Kieran Gibbs and Mathieu Debuchy provide the current first-choices is just brilliant.
Long may it continue!
