Olivier Giroud has been in fantastic form lately, and has set his sights on Arsenal’s top goalscorer accolade come the end of the season, according to ESPN.
Alexis Sanchez is currently leading the race, although Giroud’s recent purple patch has seen him draw level with the Chilean’s tally of 13 Premier League goals.
The 26-year-old South American started the season in fine form, and we were heavily reliant on his goals and assists for months. He has dropped off a little in the latter stages of the campaign however, with the burden of goalscoring falling largely on the broad shoulders of his French teammate.
Giroud claims there is a healthy rivalry between the pair, and that they push each other to be better. He is clearly in confident mood at the moment, and is hoping to continue in this fine vein of form and finish ahead of our sensational summer signing in the scoring charts.
Speaking to French publication RMC Sport, he said: “I’m not going to say something silly because it’ll be reported, but why not finish ahead of Alexis?”
“We push each other, we’re on 13 goals, and I would like to score some more to help the team achieve its objectives.”
28-year-old Giroud is arguably enjoying the best form of his career, and looks more than capable of finishing the season strongly. We have undeniably looked a far better team since he made his return from injury, too.
Friendly rivalry between teammates can certainly be a good thing, and with Giroud close to surpassing Sanchez, hopefully it will spur the former Barcelona star on and help him find his best form once again.
