On 9 April 1980, Arsenal drew 1-1 with European greats and Serie A side Juventus in the first leg of the Cup Winners Cup semi-final that was played at Highbury in London, England. Juventus took the lead just 11 minutes into the match after Antonio Cabrini converted a spot kick. It comes as no surprise that Cabrini was the goal scorer as he had won the Best Young Player Award at the 1978 FIFA World Cup.
Despite several attempts to get the equalizer, Arsenal still had to go into half time a goal down. The Gunners came back from the break guns blazing as they marshaled repeated attacks at the Italians. The breakthrough for the English side however finally came in the 85th minute when the Bianconeri succumbed to pressure, gifting the Gunners with an own goal.
Roberto Bettega, a striker of noteworthy intelligence and an impressive goal scoring record, was the sole culprit as he let in the ball past Dino Zoff into his own net. In a more convincing performance in the second leg semi-final, Arsenal knocked out the Old Lady of Italian football from the European Cup Winners Cup courtesy of a late goal by John Hollins.
