Former Liverpool midfielder Jamie Redknapp has reserved special praise for Arsenal playmaker Mesut Ozil after the German’s majestic display against the Reds on Saturday.
Our £42.4m signing splits opinion among fans, as well as in the media, but Redknapp has called for people to start viewing Ozil as he is and not what they want him to be.
The arrival of Alexis Sanchez has put the microscope on Ozil further with regards to the former’s infectious attitude off the ball, but Redknapp insists the World Cup winner is a different player of equal quality.

Redknapp wrote in his Daily Mail column: “When he’s at his best he is worth paying to watch. Against Liverpool, Ozil was at his brilliant best in a massive game. You don’t become a Real Madrid hero or win the World Cup without being something special. Ozil is just that.
“When things don’t come off for the German, people are quick to criticise. We do that too much in this country — looking at what people can’t do rather than what they can — and it’s where we go wrong so often.
“No, Ozil doesn’t charge around like Alexis Sanchez so people say he doesn’t care. Just ask Liverpool if Ozil cared about the game on Saturday.”
The game at the weekend was a landmark moment for Ozil – a huge fixture in which he finally delivered a sensational moment with his sumptuous free-kick.
Many realise he is predominantly a creator of goals rather than a goalscorer, but if he’s to become the heir apparent to Dennis Bergkamp, then Ozil needs to produce moments like Saturday on a more frequent basis.
