We are continually being linked with a move for Chelsea ‘keeper Petr Cech, with the Czech international tipped for a Stamford Bridge exit this summer, as reported by the Daily Star.
The Star’s report goes on to quote Arsene Wenger however, who insists that we have no need for another shot-stopper, as we already have three world-class ‘keepers.
“I don’t deal in ifs,” Wenger said, when asked if he was interested in signing Cech.
“We have three world-class keepers.
“We are not interested in anybody at the moment.”
Even if we were looking to sign Cech, it’s unlikely Wenger would make his interest public – not only to spare our players’ feelings, but also to strengthen his own hand. The Frenchman is likely to keep his cards close to his chest, so only time will tell if Cech is actually on his radar.
If we really are looking at the possibility of bringing the Blues ‘keeper to the Emirates, then we have at least been handed a boost.
His agent Viktor Kolar recently revealed that his client was free to negotiate with any club, so even if Jose Mourinho were keen to avoid selling to a rival, things may be out of his hands.
“We have been permitted by Chelsea to negotiate with interested parties,” said Kolar (via the BBC).
It seems a bit generous for Wenger to include Emiliano Martinez in his list of world-class shot-stoppers. If the manager is turning Cech down because we have Martinez, then there is certainly something wrong.
Wojciech Szczesny is an excellent goalkeeper, but he is not without his faults. He has lost his place to David Ospina this season, who has proved himself a reliable No.1. The Colombian showed against Swansea that he can be improved upon however, and Cech could prove an excellent acquisition.
