We have been linked with a move for Schalke 04 captain Benedikt Höwedes in the past, and the Metro report that the path is clear if he is still on our transfer list this summer.
The German international is apparently keen on an exit from the Bundesliga, and the Metro report that his £12.6m buyout clause could see him head to the Emirates.
“It’s no secret that Benedikt Höwedes has the ability to get through an exit clause in his contract,” Schalke general manager Horst Heldt told German publication Die Welt.
“He has not yet decided, but he will do it safely in a timely manner.”
Despite the Metro’s claims that Höwedes could be an Arsenal player next season however, it seems highly unlikely that a move will materialise.
Arsene Wenger has only recently insisted that we don’t need defensive reinforcements, especially in the centre of defence.
“Four is enough,” he said (via Sky Sports).
“[Mathieu] Debuchy can play there, [Nacho] Monreal can play there, so you can say we are not out to buy a central defender.
“And Gabriel [Paulista] will be a great central defender, believe me.”
With Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny still our undisputed first choice pairing, we have looked solid at the back this season. Gabriel Paulista and Calum Chambers look excellent back ups as well, and as Wenger says, Debuchy and Monreal can be used as a last resort.
The Schalke star would be a solid acquisition, but a centre-back should not be a priority for us this summer.
