We have been regularly linked with a move for Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho, and could potentially be about to make a player plus cash offer for the youngster, according to talkSPORT.
The report suggests that Joel Campbell could be heading in the other direction, with Arsene Wenger also willing to fork out £22m for the Portuguese star.
Campbell is currently on loan at La Liga side Villarreal, but signed a new contract before he left the club this past January (via the Metro).
It seems that the extension may merely have been a way to ensure a higher transfer fee however, as if the report is correct then he doesn’t appear to have a future at the Emirates.
Carvalho is a tough tackling midfielder, who boasts versatility among a number of other talents. The fact that he can also play in defence is likely to appeal to Wenger, as the Frenchman is known for playing his stars out of position when required.
Francis Coquelin has been superb in the defensive midfield role this season, but we unquestionably need reinforcements heading into the new campaign. Mikel Arteta and Mathieu Flamini are arguably no longer of the required standard, and we can’t expect Coquelin to play every game of the season.
It would seem harsh to bring in a defensive midfielder who would immediately replace the French star, especially given the way he has turned our season around. But Carvalho would provide competition, and is young enough that he may not be too concerned by not playing week-in and week-out.
Sporting Lisbon have recently been punished by UEFA for breaking Financial Fair Play rules, as can be seen here on UEFA’s website. This could potentially force their hand this summer, allowing us to secure Carvalho’s services for cheaper than originally thought.
