Arsene Wenger is perceived as a classy and passive gentlemen and whilst he consistently displays those qualities, you don’t make it 20 years at the top level in England without having fire in your belly.
Our legendary manager has shown over the years that he is comfortable taking anyone on, whether it’s through the media or on the touchline – as Jose Mourinho quickly found out.
The ‘King’, Thierry Henry, is the latest public figure to realise that even he isn’t free from a clip around the ear from his former boss following his criticism of our squad.
Arsenal transfer rumours
As this situation gets inevitably drawn out, we decided to cast our minds back to the amount of public spats Wenger has had with former Premier League stars, whether he had managed them, or indeed, faced them.
In most cases, it was Wenger unleashing his defensive shield and coming to the aid of our players or the club, but there have been times when tension has been initiated by the Frenchman.
Below, we take a look at Wenger’s most public spats with former Premier League stars.
5 – Arsene Wenger vs Thierry Henry
The two have a farther and son relationship but those ties have suffered a slight crack following Henry’s public criticism of the Arsenal squad whilst conducting his punditry duties for Sky Sports. It seemed inevitable, Henry was never going to be allowed to tread on egg shells when speaking about his former club by his employers after his lucrative move to the television broadcasters.
The situation is made even more delicate due to Wenger’s presence at the helm and the fact that he essentially built Henry’s career. His colleagues Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher can criticise their former clubs more freely as they don’t necessarily owe the respective managers of Liverpool and Man United a great deal.
Wenger was disappointed in Henry’s comments and was quick to let the world know (via The Guardian). I think a phone conversation may be due.
