The teams set to compete in this year’s Emirates Cup have been announced, and it looks likely to be another exciting round of fixtures. With Olympique Lyonnais, VfL Wolfsburg, and Villarreal all involved, we will have to be at our best to win the competition, the official website confirms.
We have failed to clinch the trophy on the last three occasions, with the New York Red Bulls, Galatasaray, and Valencia the eventual winners. It is more often than not used as a chance to experiment and build up fitness ahead of the season’s start, but it would still be nice to be able to lift the cup for the first time since 2010.
This is arguably the toughest lineup we’ve had in the Emirates Cup for a long time, with representatives from three of the top leagues in the world. Wolfsburg have been the surprise package in the Bundesliga this season, and are on course to finish second.
Lyon looked set to clinch the Ligue 1 title, and have performed superbly throughout the season. They have fallen away somewhat heading into the tail end of the campaign however, with Paris Saint-Germain set to retain.
Villarreal boast one of the meanest defences in Europe, which has helped them to sixth in La Liga. All three teams will no doubt prove a challenge when they come to the Emirates, and whoever we end up playing we are sure to be treated to some exciting displays.
