Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal believes that Arsenal are a better team than Chelsea, but lack the experience to make their talent count, The Independent reports.
As we prepare to face the Dutchman’s side for the third time this season, he’s claimed that only a ‘winning mentality’ separates us and Jose Mourinho’s side – with the Blues boasting massive experience in their squad.
Since the turn of the year, we’ve matched the league leaders in terms of form, but the Premier League is a gruelling campaign, and despite van Gaal’s compliments, the best team is usually placed at the top of the league come May.
“I think that (a winning mentality) is the quality of the champion,” van Gaal said.
“I believe that Arsenal have a better team than Chelsea but they cannot finish like Chelsea. That comes from talent and experience from having people like John Terry and Gary Cahill.”
Arsenal fans chanting “boring, boring Chelsea!” (via Sky Sports) in our home game against the Blues stirred much debate, with many questioning whether or not we’d take style over substance.
What many refuse to acknowledge is that the two factors are not mutually exclusive, with Mourinho seemingly convincing many that his method is the only way to success.
However, the Invincibles combined entertainment with success, and so did last season’s Premier League champions Manchester City. A quick glance across Europe will offer similar conclusions, with Atletico Madrid’s campaign last year an irregular tangent to the general trend.
Every Arsenal fan should be of the opinion that our philosophy can absolutely bring success, we just need better players to deliver the quality Arsene Wenger wants.
