Former Liverpool defender and current Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher has once again highlighted our need for a top class goalkeeper, after David Ospina failed to stop Bafetimbi Gomis’s feeble header in our defeat to Swansea City on Monday, Sky Sports reports.
Carragher and colleague Gary Neville scrutinised Ospina’s positioning before the cross came in and his subsequent dive to stop the ball crossing the line, which was rather unusual according to the former Premier League defenders.
Goal-line technology showed that the ball had clearly crossed the line and the spotlight was immediately on Ospina and our desperate need for a top-class shot-stopper.
Arsenal transfer news
“I think Arsenal need to go out in the summer and just buy a proper No 1,” Carragher said on Monday Night Football.
“His record is good because the team are playing well and are defending well so they’re not having that much to do, but he was bought as a No 2.
“That’s what Arsenal need. They need a world-class goalkeeper. Petr Cech? I don’t think Jose would like that.”
Cech has been heavily linked with us over the past few months (via Daily Star), however Neville isn’t sure Jose Mourinho would allow the goalkeeper to move across London.
“If I was Jose Mourinho, with Arsenal potentially being one of my biggest rivals next season, I would not sell them Cech at all.
“It lets Arsenal off the hook. You could argue they have struggled for a goalkeeper since Jens Lehmann and David Seaman. It’s a struggle to win a title without a great goalkeeper, a massive struggle.”
Hopefully, this result highlights the deficiencies which remain in our squad if we’re to sustain a title challenge next season. Many may feel the drastic conclusions are slightly knee-jerk, but a blip at home cannot be afforded if a team wants to win the league.
Chelsea haven’t lost at home all season. That is the standard.
