Arsenal are challenging Premier League rivals Manchester City and Liverpool in the race to sign Lyon hotshot Alexandre Lacazette, the Metro reports.
Lacazette has been sensational for Lyon this season and claimed the golden boot after scoring 30 goals in all competitions while also being named Ligue 1’s Player of the Year, as the report suggests.
We may already have the edge on both clubs after the striker was recently quoted as saying that he’d only like to sign for a club in the Champions League and one that didn’t have many players operating in his position.
“Everything depends on the destination. It would have to be for a Champions League club,” Lacazette said (via Sky Sports).
“Once I have decided, I want everything to go quickly…If I go to a club with six centre-forwards, it’s not the same as if I’m first choice.”
Liverpool cannot offer Champions League football which immediately puts them at a disadvantage and the number of options Manuel Pellegrini has to choose from in his forward line could deter Lacazette.
Sergio Aguero, Wilfried Bony, Edin Dzeko and Stevan Jovetic all remain on the books at the Etihad Stadium.
Arsene Wenger could be able to meet Lacazette’s demands given that we’re consistently in the Champions League and are desperate for a top-class forward to lead the line for us.
Apart from Olivier Giroud, our other options are players who haven’t yet mastered the role and have often been used out wide. The likes of Danny Welbeck and Theo Walcott long for a sustained period through the middle but seem more suited to the flanks.
A top class forward would certainly catapult us as into a title challenging team as we aim to sustain an assault on the Premier League crown.
