Petr Cech’s move to the Emirates looks to be edging closer, with Arsene Wenger already preparing for his arrival. It was always a possibility that one or more keepers would have to make way for the Czech international, and it seems the first casualty is going to be Damien Martinez, according to the Daily Star.
The 22-year-old has been used sparingly this season, but got his chance when both Wojciech Szczesny and David Ospina were out injured. He impressed initially, but had to endure a painful game against Stoke City at the Britannia.
He is unlikely to get the same chance this season however, as the Star claim he is set to be sent out on loan to Spanish side Getafe. He is still incredibly young for a goalkeeper, so it’s good to see that we are sending him out on loan rather than offloading him completely. Hopefully regular first team football – if he gets it at Getafe – will do him some good, and he can kick on and progress in his career.
If our move for Chelsea’s veteran shot-stopper does go through, then having three keepers of the standard of Cech, Ospina, and Szczesny may arguably still be too much. But will Arsene Wenger be ruthless enough to get rid of either of our senior goalkeepers?
