Reported Arsenal target Jackson Martinez will leave Porto in the coming days after an unnamed club activated his release clause, the player’s agent told O Jogo (via the Mirror).
The Mirror previously suggested that Martinez was Wenger’s key target for the striker position this summer and the boss is prepared to match his valuation providing he can sell on the three players returning from their loan spells.
Lukas Podolski, Yaya Sanogo and Joel Campbell can all operate in the forward positions, but its seems like their future’s remain away from the club.
Martinez has been prolific for Porto since he arrived there in 2012, scoring 92 goals in 132 appearances – an astonishing record.
“The departure from Porto will be a reality in the coming days. Just the details are missing,” Martinez’s agent Luiz Henrique Pompeo was quoted as saying.
“Porto will receive the full €35million (£24.7million) of his release clause. Jackson will continue in a top European club.”
We clearly fit the description Pompeo has given, but much will depend on who he regards as a ‘top European club’. AC Milan have been recently linked with the Colombian (via Calciomercarto) and could be considered as a top club – at least in a historical sense.
The fact that Martinez’s agent gave a timescale means that the truth will inevitably be revealed in the next few days and should the unnamed club be us – it would be a huge surprise.
Arsene Wenger has had numerous attempts to sign Martinez due to the release clause in his contract and it would be surprising to see the boss activate it now with the forward turning 29 in October.
