Per Mertesacker retired from international duty following Germany’s World Cup victory in Brazil, but the BFG could reverse his decision and return to the national side for the Olympics next year, according to the Daily Mail.
The Giant German chose to retire to focus on club football, and he has been practically ever present for us since he did so. He has captained the club in the absence of the injury stricken Mikel Arteta, and will be hoping to continue his rock solid partnership at the back with Laurent Koscielny next season.
The Mail claims he is planning a return however, and suggested that both he and Bayern Munich’s Philipp Lahm – who also announced his retirement after Brazil – could return for the Olympics for one last hurrah.
Mertesacker splits opinion among Arsenal fans, and many believe he is far too slow for the Premier League. He has other qualities however, and his lack of pace means age is unlikely to impact him as badly as it might do some others. His partnership with Koscielny has been fantastic at times, and the two compliment each other superbly.
