We are badly in need of reinforcements in the holding midfield role this summer, with Francis Coquelin our only realistic option at the moment. The Daily Mail claim we have found a solution to our midfield malady however, with Barcelona’s Sergi Samper a top transfer target.
The Spaniard is one of the most highly rated youngsters in La Liga, and luring him away from the Nou Camp would be a superb bit of business if we can get it done.
Barcelona boss Luis Enrique is keen to keep hold of the 20-year-old, but with a reported release clause of £8.5m he may not have much of a say in the matter (via the Daily Mail). It would be an absolute bargain if we were able to secure his services for that price, and should do everything we can to bring him to the club.
If we meet the player’s release clause then it seems like we’d have a good chance of bringing him to the Emirates, as we are more than capable of offering him regular first team football. The Mail claim he is keen on a move away, so Enrique could be left disappointed.
He is unlikely to see much action at Barcelona due to the presence of Sergio Busquets, and may therefore be open to a switch to the Emirates. Arsene Wenger is known for giving youth a chance, and there would be far less competition for a starting spot in North London.

With Mathieu Flamini allegedly close to a move to Galatasaray (via the Evening Standard) and Mikel Arteta looking well past his best, Samper would be battling with Coquelin for a spot in the starting XI.
He is not in the vein of the tough tackling midfielder many may have been hoping for, as he boasts the qualities of a deep lying playmaker and a more cultured midfielder. He seems the type of player who would appeal to Wenger though, while also being able to offer us what we need at the base of midfield.
