In one of the more bizarre links so far this summer, we have been credited with an interest in Manchester United’s record signing Angel Di Maria, as reported by the Daily Star.
The Argentine got off to a flying start at Old Trafford, but very quickly went down hill. He struggled to adapt to life in England, and a number of poor performances saw him consequently consigned to the bench.
He cost United a massive £59.7m (via the Daily Star) when signed from Real Madrid, which was – and still is – a British record fee. He has unquestionably been a failure under Louis van Gaal, and it’s not hard to believe that both parties may be looking for a change.
The report suggests that PSG and Bayern Munich have also expressed an interest, and moves to either of those two clubs seem far more likely than a switch to the Emirates.
Van Gaal will presumably wants to recoup as much of the £59.7m as possible, and it’s hard to see Arsene Wenger forking out anywhere close to that for a player who has been an unmitigated disaster in England.
His wages could be another stumbling block, as we have a far more restrictive wage structure than Manchester United do.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Wenger was actually interested in Di Maria, but it’s nigh on impossible to actually see the transfer being completed.
