After a successful tour of Asia, we will be facing a far sterner test in the Emirates cup. Our first clash is against Ligue 1 title challengers Lyon, and we will have to put out a strong side if we want to get the win.
We’ve failed to win our own tournament in recent seasons, and it would be nice to lift our second piece of silverware in a matter of weeks – no matter how insignificant the trophies may be.
Arsenal transfer news
Here is how we believe Arsenal will line up against Lyon, with Arsene Wenger naming a strong side:
GK) Petr Cech
Our sole summer signing so far is likely to get his second game against Lyon this weekend, with question marks still raised over who are No.2 is going to be.
Wojciech Szczesny has been linked with a move away on loan (via The Guardian) and David Ospina is still on holiday following his involvement in the Copa America. This suggests we will get to see Cech in action once again, and hopefully he is as impressive as he was in the Asia Trophy final.
RB) Hector Bellerin
Our second choice goalkeeper is not the only position in question at the moment, with the right-back slot a contentious issue. Mathieu Debuchy showed his quality last season, but he spent much of the campaign sidelined with injury.
Hector Bellerin seized the chance to secure a starting spot in the team, and there seems to be no reason to drop the young Spaniard.
LB) Nacho Monreal
We are likely to see Spaniards on either flank, with Monreal displacing Kieran Gibbs last season. The 29-year-old has improved massively since his arrival at the club, and deserves to be our first choice left-back.
CB) Laurent Koscielny
Unquestionably our best centre-back, it’s impossible to leave the Frenchman out of the side. He will be facing competition from Gabriel this season, but could equally form a fantastic partnership with the Brazilian.
CB) Per Mertesacker
Koscielny and Mertesacker have been one of the best defensive partnerships in the league in recent seasons, and it would be a struggle to break them up. If Wenger is looking to play his strongest XI then these two should start, but Calum Chambers and Gabriel will be looking to challenge them this season.
