Arsenal are in the midst of their first pre-season game of the summer, with Arsene Wenger’s boys coming up against a Singapore select XI in the Barclays Asia trophy.
The opening half an hour wasn’t the free flowing football we expect from Arsenal, and our opposition were looking surprisingly decent. We were still dominating the ball as expected, but we were finding them difficult to break down.
We finally got the break, but again it was anything but vintage Arsenal.
We launched a quick counter attack down the field, with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain powering through midfield. He spread the play out wide to Alex Iwobi, who continued to carry the ball forward.
Iwobi’s ball into the box was dummied by Chuba Akpom, with the ball finding it’s way to Jack Wilshere. The England international saw his shot blocked, but it fell kindly back to Akpom. The young forward didn’t hesitate to lash it goalwards, and after keeping out a number of decent shots, the goalkeeper was finally beaten. 1-0.
You would expect that goal to open the floodgates, but this game is more about fitness than goals.
Akpom has impressed at times, but is yet to get his break at Arsenal. Does he have a part to play this upcoming season?
