Arsene Wenger has been dealt a fresh injury blow with the news that captain Mikel Arteta has suffered a recurrence of the calf problem which kept him out for most of last season, the Daily Mail reports.
Arteta’s one-year contract extension was announced last week with the 33-year-old hoping to contribute more to our first team in the upcoming campaign.
However, the Daily Mail suggests that Arteta is still not fit and will not play against Everton in the Barclays Asia Trophy final despite travelling with the squad to Singapore.
Francis Coquelin’s emergence has meant that we’re no longer heavily dependent on Arteta to anchor our midfield, but his constant injury problems are a concern.
Arsenal transfer news
The likes of Morgan Schneiderlin and Geoffrey Kondogbia have moved clubs this summer and our lack of decisive movement for the duo suggests that Wenger may be happy with his current options.
Should we fail to sign a holding midfielder this summer, Wenger would be taking an unnecessary gamble in our bid to challenge for the Premier League title.
A gamble which may not be accepted by fans if we fall short next season.
