Hector Bellerin and Francis Coquelin were the surprise packages of the season in 2014/15, but Arsene Wenger claims the pair need to show they can repeat their performances again next season.
“Bellerin and Coquelin are the two players who were not necessarily planned last season to come out,” he said, as quoted by Sky Sports.
“They have to confirm that this season, and that is always very difficult to produce the same performance in the second season, so that is their challenge.”
Coquelin’s emergence was a revelation, as the Frenchman’s Arsenal career looked to be over at one point. He was recalled early from a loan spell due to injuries, and now it’s hard to see how we survived without him.
Bellerin was arguably slightly less surprising, as the young right-back has shown glimpses of quality in the past. Nobody expected his rise to be quite so meteoric though, and he now looks to be ahead of Mathieu Debuchy in the pecking order.
“He is one of the players who has emerged last year and has had a very good season,” he continued.

“Hector is a very mature, very focused player, and I am confident he will have a good season again.”
Both players have no become important parts of the team, and we desperately need them to keep up their impressive form. They both looked solid in our pre-season clash with Singapore XI, which is hopefully a sign of things to come.
Wenger is known for nurturing youth and putting his faith in our academy products, so we may well see more players like Bellerin and Coquelin emerge in the near future.
