Hector Bellerin’s rise to prominence in 2014/15 was phenomenal, and he was certainly one of the surprises of the season. The Spaniard has hailed the club and its youth system, and insists that the fans love that we focus so heavily on bringing our academy stars through the ranks.
Arsene Wenger is known for his desire to nurture youth and mould players to fit his ideology, and the emergence of Bellerin is testament to that.
The former Barcelona starlet heaped praise on the club via our official website, and stressed that seeing players like Jack Wilshere & Francis Coquelin succeed makes all the hard work worth it.
“The fans rate that Arsenal don’t just buy players – they make them the players they are,” Bellerin said, via Arsenal.com.
“Arsenal fans are really proud of that and I think that’s a great thing.
“When players like Francis [Coquelin], Jack [Wilshere] or myself come up, the fans should be proud that their team is doing what they’re doing. That’s a great thing Arsenal do.”
While what the 20-year-old says is true and we do feel a sense of pride when we see loyal Arsenal youngsters rising through the ranks, Wenger’s youth policy was always partially down to necessity rather than choice.
Our past financial struggles meant we couldn’t afford to compete with the likes of Manchester City and Chelsea in the transfer market, so creating our own talent was the only way forward.
With our new found financial clout we have been able to combine our youth policy with a more aggressive stance when it comes to transfers, with our team now consisting of players like Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Özil as well as success stories like Bellerin and Wilshere.
