A number of Arsenal stars saw their contracts expire on July 1st 2015 – and were consequently released – with Abou Diaby the most prominent name on the list. One player who was missing from the list was Mikel Arteta however, despite suggestions that his contract was set to expire this summer (via IBT).
Arsenal transfer news
The list of released players included a handful of youth stars, but there has been no news on Arteta at all.

There have been rumours over the course of the season that our captain signed a one-year extension on his current deal (via Sky Sports), but there was no official news from the club. This led many to believe he would be on his way out this summer, but it seems strange that there has been no confirmation either way on Arsenal’s official website.
The fact that he hasn’t officially been released suggests that he has in fact signed a new contract, but we won’t know for sure until we hear something from Arsenal.
He struggled for fitness throughout the course of the season, with a recurring calf problem dogging him throughout the campaign. He was unable to string any significant number of games together, and was essentially a spectator for much of the year.
There have been murmurings on Twitter that his injury is so severe that he may never play for us – or anyone – again, and that he is now doing his coaching badges to prepare for the next stage of his career. These claims are totally unsubstantiated however, and for the moment we have to take them with a pinch of salt.
Arsenal made DSSFootball delete his tweet quick. How many people don’t know about Arteta’s permanent injury? — Petr Čech Yourself (@18DialSquare86) May 31, 2015
It would be a shame for his career to end so suddenly, as he has been excellent for us since his switch from Everton. He has been a superb captain both on and off the field, and hopefully he is still at Arsenal next season in some capacity.
