Arsene Wenger has confirmed what most of us already knew and feared, that Alexis Sanchez will miss the start of the 2015/16 season, as reported by ESPN.
The Chilean star is set for an extended holiday following his involvement – and success – in the Copa America back in his home nation, which the report suggests will see him miss our opening fixture of the season.
Chile beat Argentina on penalties in the final, with Alexis scoring the winning spot-kick. His commitments with the international side will see him miss our entire pre-season, with Wenger claiming our sensational signing from Barcelona would not be joining us until the third of August.
“He’ll be back with us on the third of August and it takes about three weeks to competitive,” Wenger said, as quoted by ESPN.
“It could take him a little bit less time [to get match fit] but he’ll miss our first game.”
The 26-year-old was phenomenal in his debut season at the club, and was hugely important to our success. He was instrumental during the early stages when a number of other key players were either out injured or lacking form, and he has unquestionably been one of our best signings in years.
It could be a big blow if he weren’t to return fully fit this season, especially considering our lack of wide options. We don’t want to see Wenger forced into playing Aaron Ramsey or Jack Wilshere on the wings, and there are very few other options available.
