Thierry Henry has been fairly critical of Arsenal at times since he made the switch to punditry, and he has once again vocalised his opinion that we still need a number of signings to compete with Chelsea.
The Arsenal legend claims we are still four signings away from challenging from the title, but insists that Arsene Wenger is still the right man to lead us forward.
“That team, I think, has great mentality, top-quality players and match-winners. I still think they need four players to get closer to Chelsea,” Henry said, as quoted by Sky Sports.
“You know some people still question Arsene Wenger, but I still think that Arsene has the right attitude and fire; the fire in his belly to try to make sure that team can win another title.”
We have been accused in the past of needing a new goalkeeper, a defender, a defensive midfielder, and a striker. At the start of last season it was hard not to agree, but we have strengthened significantly since then – even if not all of it was done in the transfer market.
We have brought Petr Cech to the club, who is still one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League. It’s hard to see where another centre-back would fit in, with Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker our first choice pairing, and Gabriel and Calum Chambers third and fourth choices respectively.
We are still lacking in midfield, with Francis Coquelin currently our only option. But we are in a much better position than we were a season or two ago in that department.
A world class striker could obviously add a huge amount to our side, but Olivier Giroud has been excellent and Theo Walcott has proven he has what it takes to succeed as a striker since his return from injury.
Could we still do with making signings this summer? Almost certainly. Are we incapable of challenging without the arrival of four new faces? Definitely not.
