Arsene Wenger was recently quizzed about the potential arrival of Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema, and claimed that the links were nothing more than “media talk”, as reported by the Mirror.
The Frenchmn is often deceptive when it comes to transfers, but what he couldn’t hide was his cheeky smile when Benzema’s name cropped up.
The last time we saw that smile something wonderful happened – Mesut Özil arrived for £42.5m (via the Mirror).
In an interview (via YouTube) following our 1-0 win over Tottenham in 2013, Wenger revealed that he might have “a surprise” for us on the last day of the transfer window. As he did so, he couldn’t help letting a wry smile creep in, and we all know the “surprise” turned out to be Özil.
Check out Wenger’s now infamous Özil smirk below:
That smile isn’t dissimilar to the grin he bore when grilled about Benzema, despite insisting that the links were still just rumours.
As the Mirror reports, he refused to rule out further signings, claiming if someone “exceptional” came along then we would snap him up. Surely Benzema falls into that category?
The grin was in response to the question: “Can I ask you about Karim Benzem?” (Via YouTube).
Does this smile mean anything?
Wenger loves to leave his business late, so we may have to wait a while to find out if there is anything more to the Benzema rumours. The rumour mill certainly seems to be building speed though, and the Real Madrid star’s arrival no longer looks out of the question.
The 27-year-old would be a phenomenal signing, and we should be doing everything in our power to bring him to the Emirates.
