Many believed that our fine form in pre-season and our impressive spell earlier in 2015 meant we were finally ready to challenge for the Premier League, but former Arsenal boss George Graham was not among them, as reported by talkSPORT.
The ex-Arsenal manager claims we are still some way away from challenging the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City, insisting there are deficiencies in every area of the team.
Graham believes neither our attack nor defence are up to scratch, also echoing the sentiments of many – that we need another defensive midfielder.
“There’s a lot of work to be done before you can say they are potential Premier League winners,” Graham said.
“I think the defence is good but it’s not a top defence. Midfield is they strength – they have a host of outstanding midfield players who are excellent going forward, but I still think they maybe lack another defensive midfield player.
“And upfront, again, they are good but not brilliant either.”

His gripe with our attack is certainly valid, and we need to be looking at bringing a striker or a natural wide man in this summer. There are also few who’d argue that we need another defensive midfielder, as the burden is currently firmly on the shoulders of Francis Coquelin.
Our defence however, looks stronger than it has in years, and it’s hard to see how he’s picking holes in our current back line. The signing of Petr Cech arguably remedies our only problem area, with Arsene Wenger boasting depth all across his back four.
Per Mertesacker has his critics, but he has formed an excellent partnership with Laurent Koscielny. We also have two solid options in both full-back positions, so really can’t complain.
Arsenal transfer news
If we play like we did against West Ham this season then we will certainly be some way off top spot. But we have seen that we’re more than capable of competing with the best teams in Europe over the last eight months.
