Arsene Wenger has heaped praise on Alexis Sanchez, but admits he was surprised that we managed to beat Liverpool to his signature, as reported by Sky Sports.
Alexis joined us the same summer that Luis Suarez moved to Barcelona, and with Liverpool’s interest in the Chilean well known, it made sense that a player swap would make up part of the deal.
The 26-year-old refused to join Brendan Rodgers’ side though, instead opting to make the switch to the Emirates. Our star forward claimed he felt there was a better chance of competing for titles at Arsenal, and the rest is history.
“I thought that Arsenal was the perfect club for me, the perfect club to win titles and compete in every competition,” Alexis said, as quoted by BT Sport (via the Daily Star).
The £35m man (via the Daily Star) has been phenomenal since his move, and is already looking like Arsene Wenger’s best transfer in years. The manager insists he was shocked that we were able to pull it off though, as Alexis to Liverpool seemed inevitable at the time.
“At the start when I saw [Luis] Suarez went to Barcelona I though that is the obvious deal, one player one way and the other player goes the other way, so I had not much hope and I was quite surprised that at the time it was possible,” Wenger said (via Sky Sports).
It seems like an obvious choice to pick Arsenal over Liverpool, with regular Champions League football, a highly respected manager, and a long term project which is finally starting to produce trophies on the table. Players don’t always make the obvious choice though, so we should be thankful we were able to lure Alexis to the Emirates.
Arsenal transfer news
Wenger is clearly aware of just what a gem he’s managed to secure, and has nothing but good things to say about the former Barcelona star.
“What Sanchez has is in the first two yards is that he is lightning quick. He has that explosive attitude linked with his spirit, which makes him even more spectacular,” he continued (via Sky Sports).
Hopefully Alexis can improve on his superb debut season at the club, and help guide us to Premier League glory this season.
