Anthony Martial’s agent has hit out at Arsene Wenger in a recent radio interview, suggesting the Arsenal manager is wrong about his analysis of the young French forward.
Manchester United completed their big money move for Martial this past summer, with many questioning the club’s decision to spend so much on a relatively unproven teenager. He has hit the ground running at Old Trafford so far however, and the player’s agent, Philippe Lamboley, has responded to previous comments by Arsene Wenger who suggested Martial was more suited to a wide role, according to Goal.
Lamboley also criticised Wenger, suggesting he was content to scout and follow players, but not to actually splash the cash and take a risk.
“If the analysis of Wenger was to justify not having signed Anthony, then I accept his words and so he’s a winger. But in football there are those who follow players and those that buy them,” he told RMC radio station (via Goal).
“Anthony is a true modern centre forward. I am surprised by the analysis of Wenger, who has apparently followed him since he was an adolescent.
“I don’t agree with [Wenger] because Anthony scored between 25-30 goals a season when he was in Lyon’s youth academy and never played as a winger.
“When he goes wide and then comes central, it’s to pick up speed and get away from the centre-backs.”
If the report is to be believed, then we were also heavily interested in signing the youngster, but Wenger was unwilling to spend so much on what he saw as a prospect. In hindsight this could obviously prove to be a mistake, and Martial could become a top striker. There weren’t many Arsenal fans calling for the signing of Martial before his move to Manchester United however, despite our need for a top quality forward.
Arsenal transfer news
It would certainly be a blow were it to turn out that we missed the opportunity to sign a future star, but despite the rumours, it’s questionable whether we are in the financial position where we can splash a reported £58m (via Goal) on an unproven Ligue 1 starlet.
