Arsenal have confirmed that striker Danny Welbeck has undergone surgery on his left knee and will subsequently be ruled out for ‘a period of months’ (via Arsenal.com).
Welbeck has been struggling with a knee problem since April with the injury initially described as a minor one by Arsene Wenger (via the Daily Mail).
However, as his rehabilitation dragged on with no return date given by the club, it almost became inevitable that Welbeck may have to undergo surgery in order to cure this problem.
What is striking in the statement given by the club is that the decision to operate on Welbeck was taken last week, well in advance of deadline day.
Therefore, Wenger’s decision not to sign a striker now seems ridiculous. We were already short with just Olivier Giroud and Welbeck as recognised strikers, now we’re down to one centre forward for the remainder of the season.

Given that Welbeck’s diagnosis has been described rather cryptically as ‘a period of months’ by the club, it wouldn’t be beyond the realms of possibility for him to miss the entire campaign.
Four games into the Premier League season, and we are already in crisis due to poor planning in the summer window.
